Claire Mason was invited to take part in the NHS England Perinatal Mental Health Consultation event, held on the 12th February in London.
Participants were invited to consider the new proposal set out in the NHS Long Term Plan to set up maternity outreach clinics for women (and their partners) who have experienced a traumatic birth, have a phobia of birth, and those who have mental health difficulties following a miscarriage or stillbirth, or other kind of loss, in the perinatal period.
The inclusion of the term ‘other kind of loss’ is incredibly important as it will open up the new service to women who have experienced state intervention following the birth of their child or who have had previous children removed through care proceedings. It was brilliant to see some figures from the team's recently published ‘Born into Care’ research being used at the event and the ongoing impact of both Born into Care and Vulnerable Birth Mothers and Recurrent Care Proceedings research was evident.
